BPUMC Article for 03/19/14 by Joyce L. Wiedrich

Here we are into the Lenten season.  In entering our church, one prominently sees the wooden cross with many Purple Hearts attached to it, in front of the Alter. These are "broken hearts" with specific prayer needs which parishioners are invited to write and place on the cross during lent, for constant prayer.  We join this faith journey during lent, in a time and mode especially focused in prayer.

One of our scripture lessons this past Sunday was Matthew 4: 1-11.  In this reading, Jesus was led by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  He had fasted for 40 days and nights in this wilderness. Jesus did not succumb to any of these three temptations from the devil, one being to turn stones into bread, when Jesus must have been very hungry.  Following Jesus' third refusal to the devil, the devil left and angels came and were ministering to him.  There is a parallel to this reading with the temptation of Adam and Eve, but Jesus does not give in, showing his victory over Satan, and that he would not give in, after going through weeks of hardship in the wilderness.  We are tempted daily in our lives, one way it another. We learn to live by the word of God, and not succumb to temptation, by our faith in His word, our devotion, and trust in God.  Each of us are tempted and enticed by our own evil desire, but it is our trust in Him that keeps us on the path towards righteousness.  Pastor Judy showed us to live by faith, letting God plan and direct our day, not letting our selfish wants get in the way of the real goal of salvation.

Many Lenten opportunities await us, for prayer and service.  Lenten lunches in Penn Yan at the First Baptist Church occur weekly 12-1pm on Thursdays.  We are always in need of help and support in our shared mission at the Living Well in Penn Yan.  Contact Terry Fingar, volunteer coordinator, if you can assist.  On site training by a seasoned volunteer will occur, so no one is left on their own.  What a heart-warming experience, and life-changing event to participate!

Pastor Judy was on vacation this past week, and on 3/16, Ron Salyer was our guest preacher.  Ron always has an inspirational message!  Thank you for filling in, Ron!

Please join us for Sunday service at our love-filled church.  We share many prayers, joys, smiles and hugs!
