The Little Country Church

With a Big Heart

Bluff Point United Methodist church is a small rural church with a “hometown feeling”.

It is located within the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes Region, only one mile from Keuka Lake. We consider ourselves a welcoming congregation with members ranging in age from infant to 90+. No one is a stranger. We have activities for all ages including children’s sermons, nursery and Sunday School, and lots of music, including a choir of over 20 voices. Following our worship service we gather in the fellowship hall for refreshments and visiting.

Additionally, we have a variety of fun and inspirational activities such as fellowship dinners, dramas, live nativity, and so much more.

Once you walk in the doors of our church you will feel right at home!

The History of

Our Church

Reportedly, the original church building that we today know as Bluff Point United Methodist Church stood on another plot of land “up the hill” on Coates Road. It was fostered by the First Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Jerusalem, formed in 1838. During the next 10 years, the Society consisted of small classes meeting separately in Branchport, Kinney’s Corners, Italy Hill, Harmonyville and Guyanoga Valley.

Then at a cost of $800 for the church and $50 for the porch, our first church building was erected. In 1852, this first house of worship was moved to its present site, serving a growing congregation. In 1896, our present facility was built, incorporating the original structure to serve as a prayer room and kitchen. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, the basement was excavated to provide appropriate space for a kitchen and dining room.

Bluff Point UMC, being situated in picturesque rural Yates County, was originally largely attended by people who were farmers, or were farm oriented for their livelihood. The type of agricultural enterprises pursued were varied. Early in the twentieth century our church’s congregation, both in number and composition, may have been influenced by the presence of the Penn Yan, Keuka Park and Branchport Trolley a short distance from the church, offering another means of transportation to get to and from church.

Walking through the Bluff Point UMC today, it is evident that the builders of our church intended it to be a house of worship for generations to come. The quality of construction, the beauty of the stained glass windows, the comfortable size of the sanctuary and other features indicate much forethought, careful planning and significant commitment were in place when the present facility was built. Jesus Christ is present in the lives of those that gather at this country crossroads church. You can see Christ in the lives of all those who gathered here over the last 160 years.

We say we are a “Little Country Church with a Big Heart”. We invite all to COME SEE LOVE IN ACTION.

GIVE TODAY

Our Pastor

Rev. Jeannine Biehls

Greetings in Christ!

I have been a member of the United Methodist church for 25 years. I am currently a Licensed Local Pastor. I am married with one daughter and son-in-law living in Corry PA and one daughter, her boyfriend and our beautiful granddaughter living in Syracuse. I must also add that we have one chocolate lab and two cats.

My husband and I had been youth leaders for three decades and we are very active in the United Methodist community. I am very excited and blessed to be here in Bluff Point. I am also serving Dresden United Methodist Church and it is my hope that the two churches will enjoy activities together.

I believe that when we let God’s love work through us, we can then share that love with others. The way we share God’s love with others may be the only time they see the love of Christ.

Uniting with the mission of Christ, we will learn to form a relationship that will enable us to be open to where God wants to lead us. I am excited to be part of God’s work at Bluff Point.

Blessings,

Pastor Jeannine Biehls
